Mangalore: Information Department organizes workshop on the functioning of the Media

Mangalore, 15 July 2012: Half a day’s workshop for different Government Officials on the functioning of the media was organized on Saturday, July 14, 2012 from 10 am to 12 noon at the Zilla Panchayat Office, Nethravati Hall, Mangalore. Government officials such Deputy Commissioner , Dr. N.S. Channappa Gowda and MCC Commissioner, Dr. Harish Kumar attended the workshop. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Channappa Gowda by lighting the lamp. The workshop was also attended by Associate Professor of Azim Premji University, Dr. Narayana and Television journalist Mr. K.N. Vijayaprakash, Deputy Commissioner of Police and other police officials. The main purpose of the workshop was to spread awareness among media personnel about their responsibility towards the society.
Speaking at this occasion, Mr. Narayana said that he had worked in media for the last ten years and presently he is working outside the media. He said that he is very much concerned about the tabloidization of the mainstream media which does not promote any creativity. He said that such as trend must change. He pointed out the responsibilities of the media in the changing society and emphasized the fact that the media has to play a major role in building a healthy society.
Journalist Shiva Prassad in his address pointed out that the media should have self restraint and said that registration with the News and Broadcasting Association would help in better organized service.
Later, Mr. Ronald Fernandes of the Deccan Herald explained how news can be gathered and made an appeal to the government officials to share information with the media so that the people can get to know about the various government programmes and how they are implemented.
The District Information Officer, Ms. Rohini K. conducted the workshop. In the concluding session, the MCC Commissioner Dr. Harish Kumar expressed happiness at the workshop for government and media personnel and said that such workshops would be conducted in future as well.
