Authorities are cause for water shortage in udupi!

Udupi, 17 May 2012:  The Swarna River which is supplying water to Udupi Corporation and nearby six villages is completely dried up, if it is doesn’t rain within two days, Udupi town is going to be in sever drought.

The water for Udupi town has been supplied from Swarna River (Swarna Nadi) since last four decades. For this purpose plan1 and recently plan 2 has been implemented.  Two dams have been built near Hidiyadka and Shiroor. The water which is stored is cleansed and filtered and has been supplied to Udupi which was 20 km away.

 

 

Last year there has been a good rain and hence there was no problem of shortage of water.  Due to this Udupi Corporation on terms of earning some revenue the excess water was sold to nearby six villages and made arrangement to supply 24 hours.

 
However, this time there is no sign of rain as yet and the Swarna Nadi is completely dried up.  There is no enough water in the river not even to pump.  The Udupi is proud to have used an advance technology to pump water.  However, there is no sufficient water force to pump water to the higher ground.  Due to this problem there is no water supply to higher areas such as Manipal since last four days.

 
The Udupi Corporation presumed that this problem would be solved by Wednesday but it has now become an open lie.  The toilets in Manipal hospitals have been locked, the notices to use water sparingly has been put up at all the places and appeals to this effect have been distributed.  The restaurants/hotels in Manipal have been clamoring for water and the situation is very critical.  The people who used to enjoy water supply for 24 hours now are very much worried and shocked since last four days.

 
The situation in Udupi as well is not very different.  There is no water supply for last 2 – 3 days for Udupi town hospitals as well areas.  The water which was supplied from Town Corporation to the villages has been stopped since a month.  The people from these villages who were totally dependent on water from the corporation are now in terrible condition.

 
“There is enough water for a month “which was promised by Corporation officers not even crossed two weeks and there is a grave condition to water supply.  There are no signs of rain for a few days and the people of town are going to face serious problems.
