- CMC to purchase equipment worth Rs one crore
Udupi, 08 May 2012: With growing density of traffic, the authorities are finding it difficult to ensure smooth flow of vehicles in Udupi, Malpe and Manipal roads.
In this regard the City Municipal Council of Udupi has decided to purchase equipment worth Rs one crore, which would perhaps solve the existing traffic problems existing at present.
The host of equipment cover signboards, information boards, barricades, blinkers etc.The district police had submitted a proposal keeping forth the demands a couple of months ago.
Looking into the proposal, the CMC had immediately agreed to purchase the equipment and floated a tender. The tender process will be finalised in a couple of days and the purchases will be done.
The Government had released special grant of Rs 25 crore to mark the platinum jubilee of Udupi CMC.
It was decided to spend the funds for repair of town Hall, cricket oval at Beedinagudde, bridge at Padukere, centenary school building construction at Board school, laying of road from Ambagilu Thangadadi to Kalsanka, land acquisition at Parkala town to lay State Highway and for computerization of CMC office.
With this, the CMC also decided to keep aside Rs one crore for improving traffic scenario in the City.
Former District Superintendent of Police Pawar Praveen Madhukar had made an Action Plan and submitted it to the CMC. However, according to the former SP’s proposal the purchase of all the equipment would have required Rs three crore. Hence the CMC decided to purchase only some of the selected equipment mentioned in the action plan.
Accordingly caution boards, information boards, blinkers, security cones and other equipment will be purchased and distributed in Udupi city, Manipal and Malpe as per requirement.
Speaking to Udupi CMC Commissioner Gokul Das said that the CMC will spend Rs one crore for the project and the purchases will be done accordingly.
However, the local residents are of the opinion that Information boards and signboards are needed very badly in the City, which attracts thousands of people from various parts of the Country.
