Udupi, 29 April 2012: Who cleared the loan made by the central government mortgaging the gold? Is it NDA Prime Minister Vajpayee or UPA Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh? was the unusual debate in the regular Municipal meeting on Saturday. The reason for this is the pending bills to the Municipality by the Thenkanidiyoor Grama Panchayath for the water supplied since 2005 accumulated to rupees 11 lakhs and the Municipality has stopped the water supply recently. The Thenkanidiyoor villagers had conducted protest on this in front of the Municipal Office.
Discussing this matter in the meeting Municipal member Shyam Prasad Kudwa said that this protest has caused difficulties to the functioning of the Municipal office and whether the Police who allowed this have taken the permission from the Municipality? he questioned. Answering this Municipal President Kiran Kumar said that, there was no prior permission, but just one hour before the protest it was informed. Most of the protesters are living in Municipal area and are availing Municipal water supply facility 24 hours. Already the matter of this protest has been written to D.C. and Police department with objection, he said.
Opposition leader Jayananda said that, while the bill of Thenkanidiyoor was pending during BJP administration, the Municipality did not take any action to collect it and now while the Congress is in administration, suddenly taking action is not right, he said. Former President Dinakara Shetty said that earlier the loan made by the Congress central government was cleared by BJP government. Objecting this Opposition leader Jayananda said that, the loan was not cleared by Vajapayee, but it was cleared by UPA Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, which caused argument and debate between both parties.
At this time MLA Raghupathi Bhat intervened and said that, due to lack of political experience the Thenkanidiyoor Grama Panchayath President has reacted like this. Other Grama Panchayaths of Congress support have paid whatever amount possible, but the Thenkanidiyoor GP President not paying anything, not attending any meeting and reacting like this is not right, he said.
The debate continued between Jayananda, Yashpal Suvarna, Vasanthi Shetty, Naveen Bhandary and others in a raised voice. Such debate is going on in the last couple of meetings. But no one seemed to bother much on the villagers who are suffering without water and no solution to the problem was also found.
In the meeting the discussions were conducted on other issues such as road, rain season, drainage problems, bus stop issues, highway construction issues etc. In the meeting Municipal Commissioner Gokuldas Nayak and Vice President Bharathi Chandrashekar were also present.
