37th Annual Day Celebrations Of Young Men’s Sports & Cultural Association, Shirva

Shirva, 29 January 2012: Young Men’s ports & Cultural Association celecrated it’s 37th Annual Day onThursday, 26th January 2012. The celebrations started with flag hoisting ceremony at Shirva Hindu Junior College grounds by Sri Karunakara Nayak, Lecturer, MSRS College, Shirva at 8.00 a.m. followed by the sports meet for children of all ages as well as for adults.
In the evening, the programme started with various cultural dance session from 7.00 pm to 8.00 pm near Shirva Public Sri Ganeshothava Stage. The function started at 8.00 pm was presided by Sri. K.S. Sreedhara Murthy, Retired Lecturer, St. May’s Junior College, Shirva and the Chief Guest being Sri Kadri Navaneetha Shetty, Chief Marketing Manager, Times of India, Mangalore.

The honoured Mr. Henry D’Almeida, Mr. Manohar Shetty, Dr.Prakash Shenoy and Miss. Seetalaxmi along with the dignetories on stage.
The function started with a small prayer by a group of women led by Mrs. Babita Aras, President, Mahila Mandala, Shirva. Mr.Felix Menezes, President of Young Men’s Sport & Cultural Association, Shirva delivered the welcome address followed by a minutes silence in repect of Sudhakara Kamath, one of the founder member of the association who passed away recently. Sri Harish Acharya, the General Secretary read the annual activity report.
Four persons from the locality were to be honoured were introduced:
1) Mr. Henry D’Almeida: by Mrs. Radhika Shetty Mr. Henry D’Almeida is the Founder President of the Young Men’s Sports & Cultural Association, Shirva. Was a youth leader and was the District Organising Secretary for minorities of the Janatha Party in 1977-78. Has served for 12 years in the Executive Committee of Konkan Singers Club, Bahrain including 8 years as the President. Served for 2 years as the Internal Auditor of the Karnataka Social Club, Bahrain, 1 year as the Internal Auditor and 1 year as the Treasurer of the Co-Ordination Committee of the Indian Associations in Bahrain. 1 year as the Internal Auditor and 1 year as the Treasurer of the Indian Community Relief Fund, Bahrain. Managing Committee member of Konkani Kutam Bahrain since its inception in 1999. Trustee of Asha Kiran Trust, Mangalore. Has worked for the language and Mangalorean culture throughout.
2) Mr. Manohar Shetty: by Mr. Ramananda
Mr. Manohar Shetty is a Social Worker and the owner of Hotel Mandara at Shirva. Has donated an Ambulance to the local community.
3) Dr. Prakash Shenoy: by Mr. Gangadhar Shetty
Dr. Prakash Shenoy is the lecturer at Dr. N.S.A.M Pre-University College, Nitte and the only person who has secured a Phd for his thesis in Physics in the locality from N.I.T.K, Surathkal.
4) Miss. Seetalaxmi: by Miss. Malavika
Miss. Seetalaxmi is the 1st Rank holder in the B.Com from Mangaore University. She was the student from M.S.R.S. College, Shirva. Her education up to Secondary School was in Kannada medium. She has now proved that even a Kannada medium student can secure 1st rank in the University.
All the above persons were honoured with a shaul, fruits & flowers and a memento.
The Chief Guest of the function, Sri Kadri Navaneetha Shetty in his speech called for unity and collective efforts from all members for the growth of the association.All winners in the sports meet were presented with prizes by Sri Robert Machado, who sponsored the prizes. Mr. Henry D’Almeida then distributed late Sudhakara Kamath Memorial prizes to five financially poor, but deserving students of St. Mary’s Junior College and Hindu Junior College students. Sri K.S.Sreedhara Murty in his speech went back through his memory lane 37 years ago and remembered the begining of the association. He congratulated the members for their high spirit without which the association would not have servived for 37 years and asked the members to continue their good work.Sri Satishchandra Shetty delivered the vote of thanks followed by the Tulu comedy drama by the members of the association “Buddi Budaye” which entertained above 2,000 audience.
