Udupi: Strong opposition to the Padoor expansion project

Udupi, 11 December 2011: A central government project of oil storage facility in Padoor Grama of Udupi district has emerged and now there are rumors that for the second phase of this project about 700 acre land will be acquired. Protesting this activity more than 4 thousand people gathered at Kalattoor Shri Mahalingeshwara Temple for a huge meeting among them there were also politicians of various parties.
As already 450 acre land has been acquired for the first phase of the project, these over four thousand people who fear that the company is planning to acquire another 700 acre land for the expansion project and there has been no information given to the locals or Grama Panchayath in this matter, so first they conducted prayers at the Kalattoor Shri Mahalingeshwara and then conducted the meeting, fearing that if this additional 700 acre land is acquired, then the village will not exist anymore and expressed strong opposition to this.
Speaking on the occasion Belapu Grama Panchayath President Deviprasad Shetty said that, this protest should not be like the protest against the Nagarjuna Company. All the people of the village leaving their political party and without falling for any desire and temptation, being united need to protest this, he said. Former Minister Vasantha V. Salyan spoke and said that let us all be in one mind and united let us protest is issue forgetting our differences.
In the meeting Jilla Panchayath President Arun Shetty Paddor, Kuthyaru Grama Panchayath President Nityananda Shetty, Majoor Grama Panchayath President Ganesh Shetty, Protest Committee President Shivarama Shetty Payyaru, Lawrence Fernandes, Ranganatha Bhat, Kuthyaru Naveen Shetty, Kuthyaru Prasad Shetty and others were present.
