Udupi, 18 September 2011: Having no will to understand Gandhiji, no courage to follow him, we just keep his picture and garland it, burn stick and worship him as God, said Karnataka Law University Vice Chancellor Dr. J.S. Patil. He was speaking upon inauguration of the Seminar on “Gandhian Principles: Relevance to the Contemporary period” organized by UGC at MGM College on Saturday.
Speaking further he said that, it is 6 decades since we received Independence, but India instead of going forward, has gone 6 decades backwards. In our country we have natural environment, wealth of land, wealth of water available abundantly. In IT our country dominates in the world, but still our country is in the dark, SEZ is increasing, agricultural land is reducing, agriculture is in danger, said Dr. Patil. To come out of this darkness, the only way is the principles of Gandhi, he said.
If there is will then it is very easy to follow Gandhian principles, but courage is required. Gandhi was never academic in his life, instead he was always practical. Therefore there is absolutely no use making him into a book and selling it. His principles such as truth, non-voilence, khadi, fasting movement are all ideal for life, he said.
On this occasion, Mangalore University Professor Dr. P.L. Dharma who was the resource person was on the dias. Manipal Academy of General Education Administrative Officer Dr. H. Shantharam presided over the function. Coordinator of the seminar, College Political Science Head of the Department U.B. Gururaj gave an introductory speech. College Principal Dr. P.V. Gowda welcomed the guests and the gathering. HOD Krishnappa compeered the program. Vidyanath proposed vote of thanks.
Dr. J.S. Patil suggested to the Principal, Lecturers, Staff and all students of Mahathma Gandhi Memorial College to wear khadi at least one day in a week. Giving example he said that, at the Law College in Hubli where he is the Vice Chancellor, he himself, all the Lecturers, staff and all the students are wearing the cloths made from khadi on Mondays and on that whole day the college looks like Shabarimath ashram. At least by this way the experiment of building love of the students towards the Gandhian principles are getting succeed, he said.
