Kundapura: Music bonds Konkani language and literature

Udupi, 28 August 2011: Konkani language has vast history, even with the influence of other languages, Konkani language has managed to retain its existence with the unique influence of devotional music and folk music in bonding Konkani language and the literature, opinioned Karnataka Konkani Sahithya Academy President Kundapura Narayana Kharwi.
He was speaking in his presidential address during the inauguration program of “Konkani Devotional Music” by popular singer Pandit Upendra Bhat and his troupe Poona, in Hemmadi Shri Kashimutt Shri Gopinatha Temple on Saturday. The program was jointly organized by Karnataka Konkani Sahithya Academy and Hemmadi Chathurmasya Samithi.
Speaking further Narayana Kharwi said that, the government of Karnataka is encouraging to preserve the Konkani language literature, culture and folklore. And for this purpose sufficient grants are provided. Besides this, provision is made to study Konkani as the third language in Schools. He called upon the Konkani community to make use of the opportunity of these provisions.
Konkani Academy member B. Pundalika Marathe in his introductory note said that, Konkani language has been included as one of the National language in the 8th amendment of the constitution by the government of India. The state government has given special grants of rupees 150 lakhs and have encouraged for doing the research in Konkani language and have also given grants of rupees 50 lakhs for the expenses of annual activities.
Since 2008 provision has been given to study Konkani language in the schools and those students will be appearing for exams in S.S.L.C. in 2012 for Konkani as the third language for the first time. Among the 11 academies, Konkani Academy has maintained its first place, said B. Pundalika Marathe.
Kashi Mutt Yati Shrimad Sayamindra Theertha’s Chathurmasya Committee Treasurer Gangolli Ganesha Kamath welcomed. P. Jayavantha Pai compeered the program. Vivekananda Shenoy Karkala proposed vote of thanks.
Later, popular music scholar Pandit Upendra Bhat Poona and his troupe gave a devotional musical concert. In the background music T. Ranga Pai Manipal, Vishwanatha Bhat Laxmipura and Pangala Dinesh Shenoy performed.
