Mangalore: Bajrang Dal leader remains ‘untraceable’, uses phone

Mangalore, 18 August 2011: Doubts have been raised over the way the police are investigating the Someshwara party case, in which Sharan Pumpwell, Mangalore convenor of the Bajrang Dal, is an accused and has been declared absconding. For, Mr. Pumpwell has been using his mobile phone. Commissioner of Police Seemant Kumar Singh admitted that it was “unusual”. Mr. Pumpwell answered phone calls made by at least two journalists after Mr. Singh described him as being “absconding” on Tuesday. Other sources in the police said that it was possible to trace an absconding accused person if he or she uses a mobile phone, provided the phone was within the tower range and was not switched off. In fact, it was the method the police use first, provided they had the phone number, sources in the police said.
Mr. Singh said he would bring it to the notice of the investigating officer.
Sharan Pumpwell is among several others who have been accused of beating up party-goers and damaging the property at Maharani Farmhouse in Someshwara on August 14.
