Kaup, 11 August 2011: Two students from Manipal who had come to Kaup beach for outing got drowned in the water on Wednesday. The deceased are; Abhijit Singh (21) son of Kuldip Singh from Chandigarh and Kish Jan (21) from Macedonia. They, altogether 5 of them studying in Manipal Institute of Technology had come to Kaup beach for outing at 3.30 pm in the evening. 3 of them sat on the sand away from the water. But Abhijit and Kish were playing in the water.

At one stage suddenly when the water tide hit the shore, both of them stumbled into the water. Even before they could get up they were taken away by the water. Immediately the other three who were on the shore tried to rescue them but they could not succeed. Then they screamed calling for help, the locals came running to the place, but by that time they had already disappeared into the sea.

Later the information was given to Kaup Police Station. Local swimmers and underwater experts arrived, but it was of no use. In the night at 7.00 pm the body of Kish was found. But the body of Abhijit is not yet found.

These students have lost their lives trying for unnecessary adventure. Kaup beach is famous for its beauty of nature. In the south side of the lighthouse people come for outing in the evening in huge numbers. Tragedies take place here every year. But the huge rock which is under the lighthouse makes the access difficult to go to the north side, hence usually the visitors do not go to the north side. But the tragedy took place on Wednesday is on the north side. These students crossed the rock and went to the north side. Tragedy with loss of life on that side is for the first time.

This usually happens to outside students of Manipal as they do not properly asses the risk of the rough sea here. Highlighting the sea risks with examples of the past incidents in the orientation program to new students might help preventing such happenings in future.

Very tragic, people should be careful especially with the present rough sea. These outsiders may be not aware of the sea condition here.
