Mangaluru: Sporadic rains change water level in AMR, Thumbay vented dams

Mangaluru, 18 May 2023: The water level in the Thumbay vented dam continues to decrease gradually, while there has been a slight increase in the water level at AMR due to the recent two-day rainfall in the city.

 

On Sunday, the water level in the Thumbay vented dam measured 3.69 meters, compared to 3.78 meters on Saturday. Meanwhile, the water level at the AMR dam rose to 15.21 meters on Sunday, up from 14.70 meters on Saturday.

 

Currently, water is being supplied to the city and Suratkal areas on alternate days, with only three to four hours of pumping each time. So far, there have been no complaints from the public, except for high-rise buildings located in elevated areas experiencing lower water pressure during pumping.

 

As a result of the decreasing water level in the Thumbay vented dam, the district administration directed the MCC to implement water rationing starting from May 4. Consequently, the MCC has been supplying water on alternate days. Based on the current water level at the Thumbay dam, the city can sustain its water supply for the next 15 days. The water is sourced from the Harekala dam and transferred to the Thumbay dam. However, if the monsoon is delayed, the city will face a severe water shortage. A minimum of two days of substantial rainfall is required for the water level to rise in the Thumbay dam.
