Udupi, 19 Aug 2022: Over the years, Milagres College proudly claimed to have one of the best Libraries in the then University of Mysore 1967 till 1982 and thereafter in Mangalore University. Immediately after having the magnificent three storied building in place, for lectures, for that matter even before finishing the second floor, in 1980, the need and vision of having one of the best state of the art Library building was realised, as early as in 1971, housing best reference books. It was this huge Library Hall facilitated to conduct in-house events, like seminars, retreats etc. in those early years.
In short, it formed a vital part of world system of education then and information storage and retrieval. Today the Milagres Library is knowledge treasure that accumulated through the ages with more than 44000 volumes of Books, apart from that subscribing most of the Dailies and periodicals, in both local (Kannada, Konkani, Tulu) and English and Hindi languages.
Other day on 17th August, 2022, MCK Library and Information centre, in association with Dept of Humanities and Literary Association, celebrated Librarian’s Day, in loving memory of the father of the modern library SR Ranghanathan. At 9.35, traditional lamp lighting took place followed by floral tributes to the portrait of genius SRR.
Principal Dr Vincent Alva spoke on this unique occasion and gave a call to both students and teachers to utilise the facilities to the maximum. He being a voracious reader, informed ‘a person in love with books never be lonely’. He also had a word of appreciation to Librarian Mrs Rekha U and her dedicated team for keeping, organising and arranging the valuable books attractively to have easy and ready access.
Mrs Savitha Hebbar, Principal, Milagres Jr College, IQAC Coordinator and Dean of Humanities Dr Jayaram Shettigar, Vice Principal Prof Sophia Dias and others were present to witness the beautiful programme. On this occasion Prof Harinakshi Dept of Kannada, handed over a copy of her recently presented doctoral thesis to the Principal. Convenors and Office bearers of Literary Association led the programme. There was a display of new arrivals and fast moving and popular books as the participants took the opportunity to carry home for further reading.
Today the world of information and knowledge is available at fingertips; however it’s this library which contributed thousands of students and scholars for decades to learn and a priceless helping hand in their research works and further studies.
