Mangalore: Nihal Manjunath and Dhrikshu Vasanth claim titles in ‘Karavali Chess Challenge’

Mangalore, 19 July 2011: Nihal Manjunath Shetty and Dhrikshu Vasanth have won the top honors in the Open and Subjunior categories respectively in the ‘Karavali Chess Challenge 2011’ an Inter District level rapid chess tournament organised by King’s Academy Mangalore.

Nihal Manjunath played a quick draw with Anishcharith Bhandary in the final round to emerge winner with 6.5 points in 7 rounds. Unrated Rohith Kumar T toppled seeded Praveen Kamath in the final round to secure Runner Up with 6 points. Anishcharith Bhandary had to be content for 3rd place with 5.5 points.

In Sub Juniors, after 7 rounds, Dhrikshu Vasanth and Mahima Khandige were tied with 6.5 points each. Better Tiebreak score helped Dhrikshu to clinch the title. Mahima was placed Runner Up. Athul Shetty defeated Sourav Boloor in the final round to secure 3rd place. Although he was tied with 5 more players, better tiebreak score came to his help to win the honour.

Prizes were distributed by Chief Guests Sri B Vivek Pai, Sri I Ramadas, both young entrepreneurs; Sri Prasanna Rao, Joint Secretary, Chess Association of India; Sister Leena Rodrigues, Headmistress, Lourdes high School; CA Sri K Subramanya Kamath, President, King’s Academy. CA Sri Radesh Shenoy, Member, Organising Committee; Sri Chandrashekhar Bhandary, Chief Arbiter; Sri Praveen Kamath, Tournament Cordinator were also present on the dais.
Sri Prasanna Rao was felicitated on the occasion for his excellent service of a decade for the development of chess in our coastal belt. CA Radhesh Shenoy gave the welcome address. Victor D’souza, Member organsing Committee delivered vote of thanks. Keshav Hegde compered the function. The tournament had witnessed tremendous response as more than 225 players took part.
