Udupi/M’Belle, 22 Nov 2021: The Catholic Sabha along with the Family Commission of St. Lawrence Parish Moodubelle Unit organized Elders’ Day with Thanksgiving Mass and stage programme on Monday, 22 November 2021. The Thanksgiving Mass was concelebrated by Fr. George D’Souza, Parish priest of Moodubelle as the chief celebrant along with Fr. Cyril Lobo - Assistant Parish priest and Fr. Anil Cornelio-Rector of Diocesan Minor Seminary, Moodubelle.

In his homily, Fr. Cyril Lobo highlighted the nature and the status of the elders in their respective families. He said that elders expect respect and honour from the family members. However, he emphasized the fact that respect and honour cannot be demanded, but have to be earned. He stressed upon the fact that elders should conduct themselves in such a manner that they earn respect, love and hnour from their family members.

Soon after the Mass, elders assembled in the basement hall of St. Lawrence Parish community Hall.

Following the welcome address by Elias Lobo - President of the Catholic Sabha, two eldest members in the gathering-Salvadore D’Souza, 89 years old and Mrs. Maria Noronha, 90 years old were honoured by the dignitaries on the dais.

On behalf of the elders, Ignatius Monis, narrating the example of his own late mother said that whenever people come to visit the elderly in the family, they should welcome them with a smile and offer them whatever they could depending on the time of their visit and have good and positive conversation.

Fr. Anil Cornelio, who had served as the Assistant Parish priest in Moodubelle nearly 25 years ago, in his message said that he could recognize many of the persons among the elders. He compared the elders to the computer and said that the body is like the hardware, however, the mind is like the software which requires regular upgradation. With this comparison Fr. Anil Cornelio tried to impress upon the elders that it is important to upgrade the knowledge and attitude with the changing times so that  they can keep pace with the younger generation.

Fr. George D’Souza in his address said that with the passing of time everyone becomes older and move towards the sunset of life. As we get older we should not get ourselves obsessed with our old ideas but adopt new ideas as adapt to changing times. It is not easy to change people, but change ourselves. Elders should be the means of happiness, peace and harmony in the family.

Fr. Cyril Lobo summed up the programme with few hilarious jokes and made everyone to laugh. He said that it is better to laugh and prolong life happily and peacefully. He also recited the prayer before the meal.

At the end of the programme the elders were served with tasty lunch prepared by Best Caterers of Moodubelle.

Do not separate old parents from their children. Bond of Parents and Children to be united and not to disintegrate by the responsible community leaders. I am writing based on the incident happened three decades before in Moodubelle wherein the parish priest did not help to unite the family but later children took care of parents till their death.
