Udupi: Mohammed from Kota among Casualties in Saudi Fire

Riyad, 03 July 2011: Six Indians were among seven persons killed in a fire in the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh.
Five of the victims were from Kerala. The other Indian victim in the fire, which broke out in the second floor of a building at Al Bathha area of Riyadh, hailed from Karnataka, Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed said here.
The Indian Embassy in Riyadh has been instructed to make arrangements for bringing home the bodies of the six Indians, he told PTI.
"Our embassy in Riyadh has been asked to make arrangements for flying home the bodies of the victims at the expenses of the Indian Government," Ahamed said.
Expressing sorrow over the loss of human lives in the accident, he said the Saudi Government would be ordering a thorough inquiry to ascertain the cause of the fire.
A large number of Indian workers, especially Keralites, stay in the building.
Mohammed (43), son of the late Abdul Beary of Padukere Kotatattu in Kota of the district was a victim in a fire that broke out on the second floor of a high-rise in Battah in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Friday night.
Seven are said to died to have in the fire, of which five - Kabir Ahmed, Abdul Rahim, Ajit, Sajit and Suleiman - are from Kerala and the other, Rajesh, from Nepal.
Mohammed worked as indoor salesman in a fish counter in a supermarket run by a Keralite businessman in Riyadh for some years. Because of indisposition for a few days, he had stayed with a friend for two days and had returned to his accommodation the same day.
He was the third among a family of eight. He had come home on holidays a year ago and gone back. He is survived by wife Aisamma from Kukkikatte, son Junaid (18) and daughter Jasmin (16).
Sources close to the family indicated that since the formalities for repatriating the body would take long, his final rites could take place in Riyadh itself, in the presence of close relatives there.
