Parkala, 01 July 2011: A Village Accountant in Herga Grama Panchayath was caught in the net of Lokayuktha while taking bribe from public. Anil Kumar a resident of Herga Grama had given a application to the Village Accountant Narayana Poojary for his 9 cents land conversion. When he went to Panchayath office the Village accountant kept his demand that he should pay him Rs. 1,000 and for his assistant Rs. 150 to do the land conversion.

Anil Kumar complained this matter to the Udupi Lokayuktha Police Inspector B. P. Dinesh. In response Dinesh gave voice recorder to Anil Kumar to voice record the demand for bribe by the Village accountant, to gather proof. Accordingly on 28 June Anil went to Parkala Grama Panchayath, took Narayana Poojary in a auto rickshaw to the land to make the land sketch. Later when Anil asked for the sketch, Narayan Poojary told him to bring Rs. 1,000 for him and Rs. 150 for his assistant on 30 June. Anil recorded this in the voice recorder and gave it to Lokayuktha Inspector Dinesh.

On Thursday when Narayana Poojary was receiving the bribe in his office, Lokayuktha along with 5 witnesses raided the office and arrested the accused with the bribe money and the documents of land conversion. Mangalore Lokayuktha SP D. S. Jagamayyanavar, Udupi Dy. SP Dr. Prabhudeva Mane led this raid. The accused has been presented in the court and judicial custody has been issued until 07 July.

1. Thank God the Lokayuktha officials could be trusted! Hopefully, the incident will put some fear into the low rung administrators. 2. What was the land conversion about? Was the application legitimate? Was it for enhancing market vale in violation of prescribed rules?

Well done Lokayuktha. Corruption should be attacked from the ground level to higher levels. This will definitelly create some public awareness. All the Best... Keep Going...
