Parishioners conducted protest against Belle Panchayath

Moodubelle, 25 June 2011: Parishioners of St. Lawrence Church Moodubelle conducted protest against Moodubelle Panchayath for their decision of illegal renewal of business licence to the shop at the land belonging to St. Lawrence Church. On Friday 24th June 2011 morning at 10.30 am more than 300 parishioners with a banner ‘Fight for Justice’ went on a protest march from the Church premises through the Moodubelle main road to the Panchayath premises in a procession shouting slogans against the Panchayath and gathered there.

The survey no. 200/1BP1 land RTC is in the name of St. Lawrence Church. The building on that land is under dispute and is in the court. Belle Panchayath had confirmed in their resolution dated 06.07.2010 that the business licence will not be renewed to the shop without the permission of the land owner St. Lawrence Church. The Belle Panchayath Development Officer has also confirmed on 21.03.2011 that the business licence will not be renewed, since the building issue is in the court. But on 23.06.2011 in the meeting held at Belle Panchayath it has been decided to renew the business licence to the shop keeper, which has been a violation and hence this protest is conducted.

The procession was led by Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes, Rev. Fr. Lancy Saldanha, Alfonse Alva – Vice President of Parish Pastoral Council, Jesintha D’Souza – Secretary of Parish Pastoral Council, Comodor Jerome Castelino, Henry Fernandes and Jerald Fernandes. After discussion with the Panchayath, Louis Lobo the President of the Udupi unit of the Association International Fedaration of Karnataka Christian Association (IKFCA) spoke and said that this business licence issue has taken place without the knowledge and consent of the Panchayath President. The matter should be discussed in their next meeting and action should be taken as per the law and until then no illegal activity should take place. On this issue we the leaders shall be meeting the Deputy Commissioner of the district today evening, he said.

On this regard when the reporter asked Fr. Joswey, he said that “we are hurt with the Belle Panchayath’s decision to issue the business licence to others on the land of St. Lawrence Church, which is injustice to us and we need justice”, he said. When the reporter asked Jesintha Aranha – President of Belle Panchayath, she said that, “I have not given any kind of consent for this issue. If the mistake has taken place on this issue it will be discussed in the next meeting and the right decision will be taken” she said. Then she appealed to the protesters to withdraw their protest.

We all knew that our Panchayat has made a mistake it doesn t mean that property ownership goes to the tenant when the court judgement comes everything will goes licence possession of the building, electricity etc, there is no need of this big blunder, yes we made protest OK thats fine. Tomorrow these tenants can do anything nobody can stop them they are the local Mafias plus they beaten our youths in public one guy got black mailed as cow smuggler, but our politician did nothing. Big thanks to Bellevision for their Good coverage and regular updates in www.bellevision.com. I want to make a point here. This website is very popular in abroad than Moodubelle. The opinions and comments will not make any difference to anyone who are really involved in this blunder. I have seen people in Belle are busy in their own life. I am a regular visitor of Bellevision and when I share the local news of Moodubelle itself, people over there, are not aware the happenings. Also noticed that the people in abroad are more concern about their back home and reading their comments it says how they love their hometown. I also have suggestion to some of our readers DON’T MAKE THIS OPINION COLUMN AS CHAT ROOM. LET US ALL RESPECT EACH OTHER AND THINK POSITIVE. Yes Joba Alva, you are right.Belleans will remain united for ever by the grace of god.For the time being this protest is enough.If you want to organise amassive protest, i will support you. But there are lot of formalities to be completed before you stage a protest. By that time either the topic looses its intensity or the real culprit escape from the sceen. So, for now, better to drop the idea. We will join our hands together next time if required. God grant us peace and wisdom.

I think after Mr Louis Lobo, President IKFCA, has given a satisfctory clarification,studying the real position on the matter, I think the issue is blown out of proportion. There appears to be some politicians behind the protest march and the reactions on the protest. It is also clear that the Prsident of the Panchayath has given clear clarification and to rectify the mistake if legal wrong deision is taken. The Licence could be kept in abeyance and reversed by the Belle Panhayath in the enxt Meeting. There is appeal also. So the Parishoners must be peaceful and wait for the authority to take a decision to the satisfaction of all. Let there not be differences among the parishoners on this issue and let there not be any discussions and mudslinging against the leaders of the Church and the leaders among the Parishoners. May I call to wiser counsel to prevail?

After i read his comment i come to know that he is a politically uneducated guy. Please don’t blame Mr. Jerald Fernandes. This problem started from congress who ruling and also ruled belle panchayath from long time back. First thing dont mix the politics and church. Second thing is this problem is started from administrative staff of belle panchayath. So now fight againt injustice. Not against political party or any individual.

Hello, Mr. Silvester D souza,I hate your selfish comment on this topic. For your kind information, the issue brought to the limelight by a winning candidate of the ruling party. It may look like drama for you because you are sitting much far away from our home town.Please sincerely look at the heading of the article and faces of the demonstrators. They are not belonging to a particular party. Secondly, our parish priest Fr. Joswey Fernandes is much more matured and need not to comment on his participation to the demonstration.And we can not leave entire issue on the church commitee members to overburden them because, the land belongs to all the parishioners not sparing anybody. And we can not give up easily until the issue resolved.Now most of the panchayat members are of our community and proove ourselves to bear the big blows.We should get united irrespective of our political party for this cause until we attain our goal,but not to harm anyone. So don't mess it with dirty politics and keep on writing.Thank you.

Silvister dont be silly with your baseless statement. I think you are not aware of the fact. The St. Lawrence church committee had already referred this issue to Belle Panchayat earlier and after then how can they issue the renew the license?? Secondly renewal has taken place without the knowledge of Panchayat President. I must say Fr. Joswi is one among best priests gifted to our Belle Parish and he is a gentleman. He has taken the initiative to protest Belle Panchayat because this land is belongs to the Church and not Fr. Joswi's family. He is fighting for the rights and justice. Dear Mr.Victor Castelino, it is easy to say - have patience. The present situation is the result of patience and our chalta hai attitude. This issue is not a new issue, this matter is under dispute for many years. Church authorities have kept silence and co-operated all these years. When still the justice was not done, they had to take legal action which you can refer in this same report. Now all of a sudden the business licence is renewed when the issue is in court, do you still want the Belle parishioners to have more patience. Did you seen any such protests anytime earlier in the history of Belle church. We Christians are peace loving people and we will never go for any aggressive action. Now our parish priest and church leaders have decided to take this unprecedented move only because the issue has gone out of control and if we keep quite these politicians one day will sell our homes also and you will never know about it. Let us awake from sleep, we are only asking justice and nothing else.

Commenting on a report which is incomplete and confusing is not in the best interest of the parish. The parisheners who attended the meeting and decided to protest know better than we who are far away. So, let the eminent personalities of the parish sort out this issue and let us all back them whole heartedly. Personal attacks, mudslinging etc will not help any one to come to an amicable settlement. If some one made a mistake somewhere, there are ways to correct them in a cordial manner. Excuse me guys i am not related to president or any members of panchayath or opposition.am just commenting here coz every1 having their right to express their opinion.just want to tell the same things what Mr.Joba Alva want to say.Where were all people when it happened in ANKUDRU DAM and many other roads.some of our own religious leader were in power.they were more powerful than this grama panchayath .they were in higher level .did they do anything good for our church and society being so powerful.After being there we have neva seen them in any of our church or relegious function. I just want to say if this is wrong ,what about that ?since am now in bangalore i dont knw exactly what is going on there..just a request to give them some time to clear this issue f it happned without knowledge of panchayath officials.Instead of dragging it try to solve the problem.

All said and done! Am sure the truth will come out soon and Belleans will know who the culprit is, in this episode! Being far away from Moodubelle it is a bit difficult to know the reality, but having said that a grave mistake has been done by the Belle Panchayath officials. So naturally the blame goes to the Belle Panchayath President who should have been carefully checked the documents and verification before granting the License to the party. The land belongs to the church will always remain a church property irrespstive of any effort from the guilty party. Let us all hope and pray that this issue will have a happy ending so that the peace loving Belleans efforts to get total justice for their peaceful protest.

This had happened to me, i had a land of 29 cents ,but Belle panchayath had issued a duplicate r.t.c. of 21 cents only to the neighbour land holder. After fighting a lot i got it back, All mess.This is the habit of some of belle panchayath's members.
