Mangaluru, 05 Mar: In an era of where radiation rules every form of diagnosis and therapy for humans, the knowledge of Biodosimetry is paramount. Biodosimetry or the assessing the biological damage induced by ionizing radiation and that can be quantitatively related to the radiation dose received, can be plays major role in assessing the radiation health risk.

In the event of radiological emergency situation, management and/or segregation of exposed subjects from non-exposed would be difficult, which is biggest challenge for medical management. In view of the medical management, it’s been very difficult to handle the situation when radiation is released in to the environment where large number of general public people would be exposed and difficult to segregate the groups by exposed and unexposed by a single laboratory. The triage management is done only using Biodosimetry, which is defined as measurement of absorbed dose by using biological indicators, such as dicentrics (chromosomes with two centromeres) assay, gold standard method described by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

NITTE (Deemed to be University), located at Mangaluru, Karnataka, accredited by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and also accredited with ‘A’ grade by NAAC, is an institute of eminence and one of the premier institutes in India, focused on high quality biomedical research. It has come up with establishment of Biodosimetry Laboratory at Central Research Laboratory, K S Hegde Medical Academy (KSHEMA), Mangaluru, out of its social concern.

As a part of the program we are organizing 3-day National Workshop on ‘Biodosimetry – Perspectives on Current Trends” in association with Karnataka Science and Technology Academy (KSTA), Karnataka, from March 5 March 7, aiming to create awareness and interest among students, research faculties and general public about radiation hazards and its management. We are happy to have eminent speakers from all regions of India, delivering lectures in the workshop covering major knowledge gaps in the field of Radiation Biology. The workshop will provide a platform for the researchers, students and academicians to interact with each other and come-up with an effective research plans to handle the radiation triage during emergency situation. There are 400 participants in and around Dakshina Kannada district.

The eminent speakers Dr Tarun Sekhri Sc ‘H’, director, INMAS-DRDO, Delhi; Dr Madhu Bala Sc ‘G’, director, DIBER-DRDO, Delhi; Dr N K Chaudhury, Sc ‘G’, INMAS-DRDO, Delhi; Dr Vijay Shastri, technical director, Murlikrishna Pharma Pvt Ltd, Pune; Dr B S Rao, adjunct Professor, department of biophysics, University of Mumbai, former head, Radiological Physics and Advisory Division, BARC, Mumbai; Dr B S Sathish Rao, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (DU), Manipal; Dr Deepak Chitkara, BITS-Pilani, Rajasthan; Dr Krishna Mohan Poluri, IIT-Roorkee, Rooekee; Abhimanyu Pradhan, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (DU), Manipal; Prof Rahul P Kotian, Srinivas (DU), Mangaluru; Dr J Vijayalakshmi, SRIHER (DU), Chennai; Dr Praveen Kumar Shetty, deputy director (R&D), NITTE (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru; Dr U Raguraj, Professor, department of Radiodiagnosis, KSHEMA, NITTE (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru; Dr Vijith Shetty, Professor, department of oncology, KSHEMA, Nitte (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru; Shashi Kumar Shetty, assistant Professor, department of Radiodiagnosis, KSHEMA, Nitte (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru - deliver lectures during Bio-dosimetry 3-day workshop.
