Mangaluru: City gears up for Green Building Movement and Sustainable Development

Mangaluru, 28 Jan: The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) and the Mangaluru Smart City Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding for giving a boost to the Green Building Movement and Sustainable Development in the city.

 

In a ceremony held here on Tuesday, January 28 many leaders from government departments, Smart City, Industry, media and academia present.

 

Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) managing director Mohammed Nazeer said, ‘This marks a major milestone in our effort to make the city Smart, Green and Clean.’

 

 

IGBC chairman, Mangaluru Chapter, D B Mehta observed that, this marks a new journey for collaboration between MSCL and IGBC. ‘The vision that the MD has laid out for the Mangaluru Smart City is powerful and can make significant impact on the environmental issues as well as for the sustainable environment in the city. This is the need of the hour,’ he said.

 

The MoU signed between MSCL and IGBC envisages the joint assessment study to evaluate the green criteria of Mangaluru as per IGBC Green Cities (existing) Rating System. For carrying out the capacity building of professionals involved in the development of Mangaluru as Smart and Green City and for jointly participating at various platforms to spread awareness about the concept of sustainable built-environment in Mangaluru. MSCL and IGBC would also jointly work towards development of Green Buildings in Mangaluru. The two parties shall work together towards incentivising green buildings rating system to suit various types of construction projects.

 

On its part, leaders from CII & IGBC will help MSCL evolve Industry linkages through its vast industry base. Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists Association president Srinivas Nayak who were also present on the occasion heralded this new direction on defining learning initiatives with relevance to green & sustainable development, awareness amongst the citizen of Mangaluru and adoption of the green concepts.

 

A joint release from the two institutions said this will open doors for MSCL to showcase Mangaluru as a Model Green city for the rest of the country.

 

IGBC Co Chair, Ar. Venkatesh Pai envisioned a scenario in the new ecosystem of “learning and practicing Green for professionals like architects, urban planners, transport planners, engineers, contractors, MEP consultants, etc. involved in the development of Mangaluru as a smart and green city.

 

Arun Prabha, chairman, ACCE and Prof George Varghese of NIT - K were also present on the occasion.
