Udupi/M’Belle: Water and soil conservation drive by Lions Club and NSS Unit of St. Lawrence PU Colle

Udupi/M’Belle, 14 Dec: The Lions Club of Moodubelle and the National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit of St. Lawrence PU College, Moodubelle jointly organized Soil and Water Conservation drive on Friday, 13 December 2019 at 11 am at Kattingeri.

 

The Lions Club members and NSS volunteers along with their programme officers gathered at the residence of Ln. Denis Martis, President of Lions Club of Moodubelle. The small vented dam constructed across the rivulet was filled with mud by the Lions Club members and NSS volunteers.

 

In the awareness programme held thereafter, Joseph D’Souza, NSS Programme Officer in his introductory remarks highlighted the importance of conserving soil and water.

 

 

In his keynote address, Ln. Devdas Hebbar spoke in detail the problems faced in modern times due to scarcity of water throughout the world and outlines the reasons for the erosion of soil and depletion of ground water level. Earlier bore-wells  up to 300 feet deep could hit water. However, due to the depletion of water level nowadays the bore-wells have to be drilled to the extent of even 1000 feet to get water. Ln. Devdas Hebbar also advised the gathering how to use water economically and conserve the valuable commodity without which the life would be impossible.

 

Ln. Gerald Fernandes, Region Chairman speaking on this occasion stressed on the need to conserve water and soil for the secured future of the villagers.

 

On this occasion Ln. Joseph Martis, Treasurer of Lions Club of Moodubelle handed over a cheque for the amount of Rs.25,000/- collected by the members of Lions Club to Ln. Devdas Hebbar, Executive President of the organizing committee of the  Second Kannada Literary Conference of Kaup Taluk at Moodubelle.

 

The Soil and Water Conservation drive was attended by Ln. Commodore Jerome Castelino-Founder President of Lions Club, Moodubelle, Naveen Correa-lecturer of St. Lawrence PU College and Albert Martis-father of Ln. Denis Martis.

 

Ln. Denis Martis welcomed the gathering and Ln. Elias Lobo proposed the vote of thanks.
