Reading literature improves concentration, helps to avoid dementia – Dr Edward Nazareth

Mangaluru, 22 Oct: ‘Due to the impact of modern digital media, there is a steady decline in the people who read literature,’ said Dr Edward Nazareth, the renowned Konkani writer.
Dr Edward was speaking at a symposium on Current status of Konkani that was jointly organized by Sandesha Foundation and Konkani Writers’ Association, Karnataka, Mangaluru at Sandesha auditorium, here on October 13.
’Its not only in Konkani, in all the languages throughout the world, the literature is read less now. Reading the literature has many benefits. Reading, particularly literary fiction helps to develop empathy in the people who read it. They are able to see the world from the perspective of another person. Literature improves concentration of the mind and helps to avoid dementia,’ said Dr Edward. He explained in his talk, ’Has interest in Konkani literature declined?’
In another talk, Wilfred Lobo, editor of ‘Amcho Sandhesh’ Konkani periodical said that the circulation of Konkani periodicals has improved over the years. He dealt with the various issues related to Konkani periodicals now.
Dr Gerald Pinto, chaired the session and conducted the discussion.
Fr Francis Assisi D’Almeida, director of Sandesha inaugurated the symposium and expressed the full support of Sandesha Foundation for literary activities.

The tributes were paid to Walter Lasrado, Harryboy, Emmy D’Mello, Cypry Sampige, Jerry Bajjody and Gopal Gowda, the Konkani writers and activists who passed away recently.
