Mangaluru, 23 Mar: ‘Nurture Nature’ is the message given by Nitte Deemed to be University, vice chancellor, Prof Dr Satheesh Kumar Bhandary on the occasion of International Day of Forest at University Auditorium, Paneer campus, here on Thursday, March 21.

The United Nations has declared this year’s theme as ‘Forests and Education – Learn to Love Forests.’  Week-long events were conducted in every Institute of Nitte University.

The Students of Nitte University Centre for Science Education and Research have successfully developed QR codes to all the trees of campus.  Every tree on the campus will be tagged with a QR code to enable educating students on the plant diversity of the campus. They also have a good practice of tree adoption. Under graduate student volunteers have adopted several trees on campus. Weak saplings are preferred for adoption over healthy trees. The students are committed to ensure proper watering and care of plants during the dry months of summer.

The Nitte University Green Initiative project (NUGIP) has planted over 700 trees on campus during last two years under the able guidance of Air Commodore Sunil Pai, deputy director, and his team members of the estate department.

Prof Dr Smitha Hegde, member secretary, presented the activities of the committee for the year. A green audit of the campus has resulted in GIS tagging of over 1932 plants of significance on campus. Today it is home to over 200 medicinal plants of the region. ‘This drive will enable us to develop and sustain healthy campus for progressive academic and research activities conducted on the campus,’ said pro-vice chancellor Dr M S Moodithaya.

Prakash Netalkar, conservator of forests and managing director, Karnataka Cashew Development Corporation Ltd, Mangaluru was the chief guest.
