  • Topper from St. Theresa’s never attended private tuitions

Mangalore, 18 May 2011: Souvik Chatterjee of St. Theresa’s School appears to take things seriously even if said casually.

With the announcement of the results of the ICSE class 10 examinations at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, he was among the children who landed at the school with their parents. He had recently shifted to this school from Durgapur.

His mother, Saibali Chatterjee, said that she had her fears about how he would manage the relocation to a new school in a new city. She said that when she first visited the school, she had pointed to a board where the names of the school’s academic toppers were mentioned, and had told him casually that she wanted to see his name on that board. She was delighted that he had succeeded in achieving that goal. He stood first in the school. He scored 93.85 per cent (657 out of 700). He got 92 in English and Hindi, 99 in Environmental Education, 92 in History-Civics-Geography, 98 in Mathematics, 94 in Science, and 90 in Computer Applications.

“It (relocation) was all quite challenging to me. My scores would not have been possible if I did not have the support of all the teachers and my parents,” he said. “I did not take tuitions, I did not study after 5 p.m. and I continued to watch TV especially during the examination,” said Souvik, who was the captain of the school football team and house captain in cricket. He plans to move to Lourdes Central School.

Akshaya Kakkilaya stood fourth in the same school with 91.70 per cent (642 out of 700). He got 90 in English, 95 in Science, 92 in Maths, 92 in Environmental Education, 95 in History-Civics-Geography, 92 in Computer Applications and 86 in Kannada. “I had a problem with scoring high in languages. But my teachers analysed my marks and helped me step-by-step, so I was able to do well,” he said.

Akshaya is fond of Science and general knowledge quizzes. He plans to join Kendriya Vidyalaya, Panambur, he said. Both of them are interested in pursuing engineering. School principal Sr. Premitha B.S. said Souvik, who happens to be the head boy of the school, had been consistently good in studies.

The school has 88 students who took the board exams. Of them, 54 got distinction and 10 of the 54 got above 90 per cent, she said.
