New Delhi, 13 April 2011: A national level female athlete lost her leg after being thrown out of a moving train near Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh.

The incident occurred on Monday after the victim, identified as 23-year-old Anurima (Sonu) Sinha, was coming to Noida from Faizabad on Padmavat Express for attending a Central Industrial Security Force recruitment drive. Sonu is a national level football volleyball player and currently represents the Uttar Pradesh team.

Arunima Sinha was headed to Delhi when a group of men tried to snatch her gold chain. When she fought back, they pushed her onto the track as the train was passing through Bareilly.

Anurima is now in hospital in Barelly and an FIR has been lodged. ’’I fell on the adjoining track, but could not get up. I was too late. I saw a train come and run over my left leg. The villagers found me and brought me to this hospital,’’ said Arunima.

A senior ADG Railways AK Jain said that no one informed railway police about the incident.

Jain also denied that there was a robbery attempt in the train and that 764 trains passing through Uttar Pradesh have no security personnel on board due to shortage of force.

"Nobody informed the railway police. There was no GRP in the train when the incident occurred. We are talking to railway department. She was found lying on the track at 4 AM on Tuesday. She was sitting in the general compartment and she saw a few persons fighting. She still has a gold chain. There was no robbery in the train. No one knows what had exactly happened. We can only rely on statement of the girl," said Jain.
