Belthangady/Udupi, 02 Jul 2015:  The deadly H1N1 influenza is spreading rapidly in the coastal belt and the recurring cases have evoked a sense of fear among the people. Within a week’s time, the deadly influenza has claimed two lives in the coastal belt. On the other hand increasing number of Dengue cases is also unleashing havoc in the region.

As per government records a total of 499 samples have been tested, out of which 108 samples have been found positive for H1N1 influenza. However, this startling fact has not been revealed by the health department.

What is shocking is the fact that, in the name of prevention and precaution, the hospitals in the region have been resorting to prescribing medication of H1N1 for all types of fever.

According to the district health officer Dr. RamaKrishna Rao, out of 499 samples, 108 cases are positive. A total of seven have died of the disease and the rest have recovered.

Dr Rao is of the opinion that there is no need to panic as the influenza can be cured with timely medication.

Though the number of cases of H1N1 is believed to be on the higher side in Udupi, no deaths have been reported here.

According to the Udupi district health officer Dr. Rohini, precautions have been taken by storing medicines in all the governement hospitals.

She has urged the people to get themselves tested in case they are suffering from fever. Neglecting the symptoms may lead to serious complications, she added.
