Mangalore, 26 February 2011: A group of unidentified assailants who came in a vehicle waylaid Kabeer, a murder accused and his friends on their way home in a motorcycle at Charavu near Gururpur along NH-13 and fatally assaulted Kabeer on Friday. Kabeer, and his friends Nazeer and Sarfaraz were returning home after Friday prayers when the assailants rammed their vehicle onto the motorcycle and attacked Kabeer. His friends sustained injuries after falling off the vehicle.
Kabeer, a prime accused in the murder of Sukhananda Shetty, a BJP leader in December 2006 and other anti-social elements from the majority community succumbed to injuries inflicted by sharp edged weapons on the spot. Police later shifted the body in a private truck to a hospital in the city for postmortem. The assailants spared Nazeer and Sarfaraz, who have been admitted to a private hospital in the city for treatment and are recovering.
City police chief Seemanth Kumar Singh who visited the crime scene and supervised the shifting of the body to the mortuary told TOI that police have stepped up vigil across the city police commissionerate limits in wake of the incident. "We have posted additional police personnel in Gurupur, Kaikamba, Vamanjoor and other communally sensitive areas to counter any possible backlash and have used KSRP and DAR men there," he said.
Expressing confidence of nabbing the accused soon, Seemanth said the incident could be borne out of revenge for the earlier killings that Kabeer was accused off. SP DK Rural police district A S Rao said police in the rural district also have been put on alert and officials put on bandobast duties to prevent any possible backlash. DK has a long history of retaliatory attacks that such murders with communal overtones bring in the wake of the initial incident.
