Mangalore, 24 January 2011: An eight-year-old boy was sexually assaulted by a 22-year-old man at a madrasa in Ullal police station limits on Saturday night. The police have arrested Toushib (22), who has been remanded to the Mangalore Prison.

The Ullal police said the boy, who is the second of the four children of his parents, was a regular visitor to the madarasa next door. The boy was one among the several children that Toushib was giving religious lessons. He was assisting Toushib in preparing “bhang”, the police said.

On Saturday evening, he returned to the house and told his father, a construction worker, about the crime committed allegedly by Toushib. Father admitted his son to a nearby hospital, which informed the police. A complaint of father was registered by the Ullal Police.

The Ullal police inspector, Mr. Prakash, said the police arrested Toushib for allegedly committing an offence under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. Toushib was subjected to medical test and then produced before the jurisdictional magistrate, who remanded him in judicial custody till February 5.

Chairperson of Child Welfare Committee Asha Nayak said the boy was under mental trauma after the assault. “He is looking forlorn and interacts only with a few persons. The boy has developed a mental block over Saturday’s incident,” she said.

Ms. Nayak visited the hospital following directions of Nina Nayak, Chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR).

Ms. Asha Nayak said she had spoken to the boy’s parents and told them about the need to send him for counselling. The CWC would help the family in getting treatment for the boy once he was discharged from the hospital.

The committee would arrange for monthly sponsorship of Rs. 500 for the boy. The committee was considering ways in which the boy’s family could receive financial assistance from the Government.

Ms. Asha Nayak said a report about the incident would be sent to the KSCPCR.
