Mangalore: Segregated waste collection begins

Mangalore, 11 January 2011: The door-to-door segregated waste collection was launched on a pilot project basis in the city on Monday. To begin with, ward 26 (Derebail South-West), 27 (Boloor) and 28 (Mannagudde) of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) would be benefited by the scheme.

 

 

Speaking after inaugurating the programme, Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav said the people should co-operate by separating the degradable and non-degradable waste at home or their business premises. “A nominal monthly fee of Rs 30 will be charged from houses to collect the waste. The segregated waste will be disposed scientifically,” he added.

 

Commercial institutions will have to pay Rs 50 to 150, hotels will be charged Rs 150 to Rs 500, marriage halls, vegetable, meat stalls will be charged Rs 100 to Rs 500 per month for the door-to door collection service. He said that the degradable waste can be converted into manure. Meanwhile, the non-degradable waste can be re-used after recycling precess, he said adding that the waste management will be profitable business once the recycling and re-using processes were started effectively.

 

MCC Commissioner Dr K N Vijayaprakash said that the degradable and non-degradable waste collected will be stored in separate containers. “Penalty can be imposed on those who do not co-operate . Hence, people should co-operate by segregating waste at their house. Organisations and SHGs should also take part in the cleanliness drive by organising awareness programmes,” he added. Mayor Rajani Dugganna and Social Worker Prabha Kudva spoke on the occasion.
