Karwar, 09 January 2011: Trainers of the Karavali Water Sports here discovered a dead dolphin in the sea and brought it to the shore of Baithakol Aligadda beach in Karwar, on Saturday.
They later handed over the carcass to the Department of Forests. The trainers’ team spotted the dolphin floating in the sea, 500 meters from the shore in the morning, when they were conducting water sports.
The fish has been identified as a Long-beaked Dolphin, whose scientific name is Delphinus Capensis. The seven-foot- long dolphin weighed 120 kg.
“The right fin of the dolphin was infected. Also, there was a lot of blood loss as the infection spread to the lungs, leading to its death,” said Dr V N Naik of the KVV Centre for Ocean Studies.
After the post-mortem, the dolphin will be buried on the seashore and later its skeleton will be displayed at the Science Centre in Karwar, added Naik.
