Media Release

Mangalore, 25 October 2010: The incidence of breast cancer in India is on the rise and is rapidly becoming the number one cancer in females pushing the cervical cancer to the second spot. The seriousness of the situation is apparent after going through recent data from Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The rise is being documented mainly in the metros, but it can be safely said that many cases in rural areas go unnoticed. It is reported that one in 22 women in India is likely to suffer from breast cancer during her lifetime.

Breast related complaints cause significant physical and psychological stress on women. The fear of being diagnosed to have cancer is an important reason why at times women hide their problems for a long time. Although breast cancer is an important problem in the older age group, a majority of the breast related complaints especially in the younger age are not cancer related.

However, being aware of the risk factors for developing cancer and being able to detect changes in the breast is an important step in early diagnosis of breast cancer. Early detection by regular clinical examination by the surgeon and necessary investigations would go a long way in ensuring better treatment results and survival.

In this regard KMC Hospital is organsing a week long free breast screening camp at KMC Hospital Attavar starting from 26th October to 30th October from 9 am to 4 pm. Screening will be done by qualified lady doctors. A special discount coupon will be issued for patients requiring to undergo Mammography which can be redeemed on appointment basis. Self breast examination techniques will be taught by qualified staff.

Everyone can undergo screening once a year and it is mandatory that a woman over 35 yrs of age gets a regular check up done. It is advisable to have a check up if there is a lump or thickening in the breast or if there is any spontaneous clear or bloody discharge from the nipple; if there is any family history of breast cancer; if a woman has never had children or never breast fed or has had their first child over the age of 30 yrs; or if a woman has had radiation treatment to their chest area etc.

Dr. Mahesh Inder VS, COO has requested all the women to make the best use of this camp and get themselves checked, as early detection is timely cure for any ailment.
