Service road collapses in Santhekatte underpass construction area, residents raise concerns

Udupi, 10 July 2023: A portion of the service road in the underpass construction area near just inaugurated Mandavi building at Santhekatte near here caved in on Monday, July 10, causing partial damage to the retaining wall. Residents of Nayanpalli sourounding areas raise concerns.
The much expected this incident due to heavy rain in the last week has raised concerns among residents and retail shop owners who fear the potential collapse of the entire service road and national highway as well.
The mud slip has also caused a perilous situation for the building in the vicinity. Many are left without access roads since the collapse. Residents are requesting the construction of a new road to ensure their mobility since their previous route has been disrupted by the collapse.
The residents blamed the NHAI, Contractor and the Member of Parliament for their misery. They alleged that the construction work was moving at the snail’s pace despite assurance that the construction will be completed swiftly.
Since the district administration and local MLA visited the underpass work underway places after the rain of the season started. Some residents say that this year the rain has delayed and the work done in very slow than expected. There was ample time to speed up the work and face the calamities. Expressing their frustration, some residents have threatened to block the road and organize protests if the concerned authorities fail to take action.
The top police officials visited the service road collapse place and met the NHAI officials. Local MLA is in Bangalore due to session is underway.
