  • ‘DC will be its convener and stakeholders will be the members’

Mangalore, 22 September 2010: A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) will start functioning under the Urban Development Department for the implementation of Mangala Corniche Riverfront Development project.

 

Addressing a technical discussion on the project at Deputy Commissioner’s office on Tuesday, Karnataka State Industrial Investment Development Corporation (KSIIDC) Chairman N Yogish Bhat said that the SPV will have the Deputy Commissioner as its Convener and stakeholders will be the members.

 

Mangala Corniche, the Riverfront Development is being implemented by KSIIDC, Mangalore Urban Development Authority,  Mangalore City Corporation and Coastal Development Authority with assistance from Gujarat Town Planning Scheme model in PPP model.

 

Bhat informed that a comprehensive survey will be conducted by KSIIDC from Ullal-Kulur-Maravoor-Gurupura-Kannur-Ullal. He said that the 30 km long road will be designed like a ‘necklace’, which will touch all the three National Highways, viz NH-17, NH-48 and NH-13. Mangala Corniche road will have Kannur to Ullal bridge, Ullal to Kulur bridge, Kuloor to Maravoor bridge and Maravoor to Gurupur bridge developed in four parts.  Bhat said that the project, which was pending for long time and, which was written off as a unsuccessful project is finally being realised only because of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa’s faith on the project.

 

Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj said that the development objectives of the project is to strengthen the economic base, rejuvenate vacant or underutilised areas, improve public transit and transport system along the river, minimise the impact of incompatible land uses and provide a balance of land uses etc.  He said that the waterfront development is laid on the principle of connecting the adjoining neighbourhood and the city, rather than separating them.  “In order to achieve the objectives, we propose a multi-disciplinary team of experts comprising of urban planners, urban infrastructure planners, engineers, architects, transport engineers, financial analysts etc,” said the DC.

 

No land acquisition

Deputy Commissioner said that there will be no compulsory land acquisition for the project as the project plans to pool land together. “Though the road will be developed on 100 ft area, the planning will be done ten times the said area. The project will only re-develop or re-model the city through land pooling,” said the DC. KSIIDC Managing Director Vanditha Sharma, PWD Superintending Engineer B S Balakrishna, City Municipal Commissioner Dr Vijayprakash others were present.
