Dakshina Kannada’s monsoon-health to exceed expectations

Mangaluru, 21 Jun 2018: After decades of deficit, rainfall in Dakshina Kannada breached its normal rainfall record for the first six months, by registering 59mm extra rain.

 

The rainfall figures show that the district received extra 59mm before the end of June, indicating that the district is all set to receive above average monsoon. While the district records 1,176.2mm of normal rainfall from January to June, this year the rainfall has been 1,235.3mm, an extra 59mm that too with 10 more days to go for the end of the month. Last year, the district had received 638.4mm a deficit of 537.8 mm. In the previous years too, the monsoon-health of the district wasn’t too rosy.

 

Of the five taluks, Mangaluru taluk received the highest amount of rainfall at 1,358mm in the first eight months – thanks to the May 29 deluge which recorded over 280mm of rainfall in a single day. With the eight month normal rainfall for Mangaluru taluk being 1,248mm, the taluk received 110mm of excess rainfall. Last year the eight month rainfall was half at 642mm.

 

The other taluks, barring Bantwal, received more than the normal eight month rainfall. Bantwal taluk received 1,107mm of rainfall which is 111mm less than the normal eight month rainfall for Bantwal taluk.

 

Good rainfall in June

The district received 735mm of rainfall in the first 20 days of the month, which is just 200mm short of normal average for June month (942mm). With another 10 days to go and Met department predicting good rains, this too is likely to be breached. Last year, the June month had received less than half at 468mm as on June 20. Among the taluks, Belthangady has received highest rainfall at 834mm till June 20 and the June average for the taluk is 977mm. Last year the taluk had received 540mm till June 20.


92mm on June 20

The district recorded 92mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours from 8.30am of Tuesday. Mangaluru taluk received the highest rainfall of 130 mm, with Belthangady taluk receiving the least at 68mm. Bantwal, Sullia and Puttur taluks received 117, 73 and 72mm of rainfall, respectively. Last year the district had received 3.6mm of rainfall on the same day. The district receives 941mm of rainfall as normal average till June end and this year. The rainfall has been 735mm in the first 20 days of the month. Last year it was 468mm of rainfall till June 20.
