Panaji, 26 July 2010: Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily on Sunday said around two lakh undertrials across the country have been released since January this year as a part of judicial reforms initiated by Central Government. "We made an experiment in regards to undertrials.

We gave mission mode programme on January 26 to July 31, 2010 to release three lakh prisoners who are undertrial for not bigger offences," Moily told reporters. "The target was that out of three lakh, two-third should go. To our surprise, more than two lakh have been already released and the number will increase by July 31," the minister said.

Moily was briefing reporters after chairing the regional review meeting on implementation of 13th finance commission recommendations in improving justice delivery and other matters in Goa. This was the fifth and the last regional review meeting held by union law ministry, which aims to prepare a national roadmap for judicial reforms.
