Heavy rains inundate low lying areas in M’lore

Mangalore, 17 July 2010: Heavy rains continued to lash Dakshina Kannada for the last 24 hours. Many low lying areas have been inundated in and around Mangalore including Jeppinamogaru and Yekkur. The break-down of the barricade of the canal which flows towards river Natravati from Pumpwell has resulted in the flood in the nearby areas including Jappinamogaru. Some roads were completely inundated with rain water, affecting the flow of vehicular traffic near Yekkur and Jeppinamogeru. Continuous rainfall also resulted in a minor landslide near Yekkuru. The campus of a primary school in Jeppinamogeru was inundated.

The low lying areas of Kottara, Mannagudde, Kodikal areas were also inundated. “MCC gang men have already visited the flood affected areas and are involved in removing the flood water. Some of the houses have been partially damaged along with damage to roads,” said MCC Commissioner Dr K N Vijayaprakash. Home Guards too were pressed into service in many areas.

With the region receiving heavy rainfall, the water-level in rivers, rivulets, streams have also been increased considerably. In the last 24 hours, Mangalore received highest rainfall of 109.4 mm followed by Bantwal—90.4 mm, Sullia—46.4 mm, Puttur—41 mm and Belthangady 34 mm.

Heavy to very heavy rain likely to occur at isolated places over coastal Karnataka when the rainfall shall exceed 125 mm in the next 48 hours, informed a press release from metereological department.
