Mangalore: Rains recede but sea erosion continues

Mangalore, 19 June 2010: Heavy rains which has been lashing the district for the last few days receded on Friday. The region received intermittent rains with sun playing hide and seek. 

 
The gravity of sea erosion in Ullal region has decreased and the work on dumping boulders on the seashore to check sea erosion has commenced at Kaiko and Hileriyanagara in Ullal.

A house near Beeri collapsed owing to heavy rains which has been lashing the region for the last few days. The house belongs to Anwar.

The house was given on rent. However, there was nobody at home when it collapsed. Another house was partially damaged at Chembugudde. The house belongs to Paul George and the loss has been estimated at Rs one lakh. MLA U T Khader, Ullal TMC President U A Ismail and others visited the spot.

In the last 24 hours, Mangalore received highest rainfall of 114.4 mm followed by Bantwal—84.6 mm, Moodbidri—80.6 mm, Puttur—65.4 mm, Belthangady—60.3 mm, Kadaba—34 mm and Sullia—31.8 mm. From January till date, Bantwal has received 729 mm (395.6 mm last year), Belthangady—643.1 mm (395.3 mm last year), Mangalore—607.2 mm (485.8 mm last year), Puttur—696.9 mm (442.2 mm), Sullia —579.4 mm (353.6 mm last year).

Warning

A strong onshore winds mainly from Westerly direction with the speed occassionally reaching 45 -55 kmph is likely to hit the coastal karnataka in the next 24 hours, according to a release from the matereological department.

Udupi

Udupi district received an average rainfall of 66.66 mm for the last 24 hours. Udupi taluk received 70.20 mm rainfall while Kundapur recorded 71.40 mm and Karkala registered 58.40 mm rainfall.

According to Kundapur Taluk Office, a loss of Rs 35,000 has been incurred in Kundapur taluk. The wall of a house belonging to Basava Naika in Hosangadi village collapsed due to the heavy rain coupled with gusty wind. The loss has been estimated at Rs 30,000. A house belonging to Karku Harijana was damaged in Mullugudde Belur and the loss is put at 1,500. The house of Gowri Machcha was damaged and the loss has been put at Rs 3,000.

Meanwhile, the sea erosion has slightly increased in Padukere and Hoode areas of Udupi taluk. Speaking to Deccan Herald, Udupi Tahasildar Prasanna informed that the authorities concerned have not come across any severe damage so far.

A proposal has been sent to Deputy Commissioner Hemalatha for constructing temporary sea walls at Padukere. Preventive measures will be taken immediately, he added.

Owing to lightning, the electric wires in several houses have been damaged in Kundapur and Karkala taluk. Cattle belonging to John Saldanha were killed when lightning struck at Bola village in Karkala. The loss has been put at Rs 30,000.
