- More people could have died in June, in a replay of last year’s crash; incident shows training standards at airline poor: experts
Mangalore, 21 September 2011: Another accident was averted at Mangalore airport on June 25 when an Air India Express aircraft almost touched the end of the table-top runway. The pilot of the aircraft has been “grounded.”
On May 22, 2010 an Air India Express plane from Dubai overshot the runway at the Mangalore airport leading to the death of 158 people onboard. Describing the latest incident as “pilot error”, the airport sources said the aircraft touched almost the end of the runway because of faulty landing. The passengers of the aircraft may or may not have come to know of the incident, the sources said.
They said the incident came to the notice of the authorities while scrutinising the tapes . The scrutiny was done by the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation. Mangalore Airport was informed of this at a later stage. The matter is now between DGCA and the airlines, the sources said.
