Riyadh: KWAR Annual Sports & Cultural Event - Mega Success

Riyadh/Saudi Arabia, 16 Apr 2014: Karavali Welfare Association Riyadh (KWAR) organized their annual sports and cultural event here on Friday April 11.

 

Although, it was a low key affair, the members and KWAR’s well-wishers turned out in huge numbers.

 

KWAR president Royston Prabhu, former president Ramesh Shetty, general secretary Muzaffar Ali, treasurer Rajesh Kumar, joint secretary and BARSA president Mahesh Hegde and other office bearers inaugurated the programme. 

 

Dr Ashwin Shetty was the chief guest of the occasion.

 

Air India – Riyadh station manager Kingsley Fernandes was the guest of honor.

 

The function started with team sports events - men’s volleyball tournament, in which 6 teams participated.  The tourney was won by Karnataka Friends  and Udupi Friends were the runner up.

In Women’s throw ball, which was the highlight of the Sports Day, 3 teams participated, in which UDI UDI team of Konkan  Ghar led by Anita Eric D’Sa and Bunts Association Riyadh Saudi Arabia (BARSA) led by Dr Vanishree  Santhosh  Shetty reached the finals. The final was a real treat to watch, which was a well fought game with tempers high on both sides, BARSA beat UDI UDI to claim the KWAR e second year in succession. Udi Udi of Konkan Ghar was the runner up.

 

Many more games were arranged for men and women as well as for children.  For men, the main attraction was the coconut breaking game and tug of war.  Tug of war is truly the main attraction for KWAR members, year after year and this year too they thoroughly enjoyed this sport. Both the teams fought hard but the winners were Jolly Boys and UDI UDI of Konkan Ghar team was the runner up.

 

 Many games for children and ladies were conducted by  Amitha Prabhu and Shaila Salian, supported by other lady members. Newspaper race for ladies was fun to watch.  The children and women took part in several games with great enthusiasm. It was a memorable sports day and all the members were very sportive throughout the sunny day. The young health engineers were assigned to monitor and keep the ground area clean.

 

 

The cultural event started in the evening at 5.30pm.  KWAR honorary treasurer Rajesh Kumar welcomed the gathering.  KWAR honorary secretary Muzaffar Ali briefed about KWAR’s activities for the year 2013 - 2014.

 

Dr Ashwin Shetty in his chief guest’s address stressed the need for unity. 

 

KWAR cultural secretaries Suresh Raj and Prakash Shetty were instrumental in presenting the audience with a variety of cultural Programmes by Karavali Children’s dance. The highlight of the cultural events was the wonderful presentation by Murdeshwar Group showcasing their traditional wedding ceremony, singing  and mimicry by Sunil Poojary  from Udupi,  Nazeer,  Bhaskar  and the surprise 45-minute nonstop magical Show by Cyrus was a super hit.

 

The trophies and prizes were distributed to the winners of different competitions.

 

 

KWAR thanked all our donors, well-wishers and all the members who over-whelmingly supported to make this sports and cultural event a grand success. Special thanks were accorded to key sponsors – City Max, Air India, Jet Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Shyam Hollow Block, OTS Cargo Movers, Lamah Establishment, Centre Point Group’s Shoe Mart and Shoe Express and huge contributions from individual KWAR members.   KWAR also thanked Yathiraj, Stanly Cardoza and group for the breakfast and lunch arrangements. 

The cultural secretary Prakash Shetty compered the cultural programme. 

 

The programme ended at about 9.00pm by singing Indian National Anthem.
