Udupi: Late Anandraya Kamath Memorial Mercy Trophy Inaugurated in Moodubelle

Udupi/M’belle, 28 Dec 2013: Late Anandraya Kamath Memorial Mercy Trophy was inaugurated at the St. Lawrence PU College ground, Moodubelle on Saturday, 28 December 2013 at 8.30 am by Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes in the presence of Rajendra Shetty-President of Belle Grama Panchayat, Commodore Jerome Castelino-Dean of St. Lawrence College, Alphonse K. Alva-Vice President of Parish Pastoral Council, Gerald Fernandes-Former President of Zilla Panchayat and organizers of the tournament-Ivan Menezes and Herman Castelino. Other guests of honour included Kiran Crasta and Valerian Fernandes-President and Vice President of Udupi Diocese Catholic Sabha respectively and Mrs. Helen D’Souza-manager of Moodubelle Charitable Trust.
Following the welcome address by Ivan Menezes, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes formally inaugurated the Mercy trophy Tournament by lighting the lamp.
Gerald Fernandes spoke about the contribution of late Anandraya Kamath, the past teacher of St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High School who instilled a love of cricket among the high school students.
Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes complimented the Mercy Trophy Tournament organizers for conducting the tournament with good intention of not only promoting the love of cricket among the villagers but also using the sponsorship money to help the poor and needy. Thereafter, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes paid respect of Late Anandrai Kamath by garlanding his portrait.
Rajendra Shetty appreciated the efforts of Mercy Trophy organizers in promoting the game of cricket and their charitable activities.
Commodore Jerome Castelino in his message said that the Mercy Trophy organizers helped some of the poor students of St. Lawrence College to pay their college fees and showed their magnanimity in promoting higher education among the underprivileged students and wished well to the tournament. He also said that the students have done very well in their last examination securing good percentage.
Alphonse K. Alva also in his address wished well to the Mercy Trophy Tournament and complimented their efforts in using funds generated through the tournament to help the poor and needy.
Ivan Menezes proposed the vote of thanks and Charles Quadros compeered the inaugural programme.
Following the end of the formal inauguration of the Late Anandaraya Kamath Memorial Mercy Tournament, Commodore Jerome Castelino and Rajendra Shetty went to the cricket pitch and opened the tournament by batting and bowling by Commodore Jerome Castelino and Rajendra Shetty respectively. Rajendra Shetty also wielded the bat. The regular tournament started thereafter.
Twelve teams representing different regions and organizations are participating in the Late Anandraya Kamath Memorial Tournament which will be played on the knock out basis throughout the day. The valedictory function will be held at 5.30 pm. Vinay Kumar Sorake, Urban Development Minister in the Karnataka Government is expected to attend the valedictory function.
