Howrah, 23 Mar 2012: A 48-year-old man was stabbed by some unknown miscreants outside the Howrah railway station on Thursday afternoon. The victim, reportedly physically challenged, scampered to the station complex through the subway near the state bus stand and collapsed near a ticket booking counter with the knife stuck to his abdomen and the hilt visible. The incident, occurred around 3.25pm, sparked panic among the passengers.

"He was lying on the floor in a pool of blood and trying to attract people’s attention. On getting close, we realized that he had been stabbed. The Government Railway Police (GRP) outpost was nearby and we informed the policemen on duty. We also informed the station manager and an ambulance was arranged by the railways. He was shifted to the Howrah District Hospital where he underwent surgery," a railway official said.

According to sources, he was identified as Subodh Roy, a resident of Gazole in Malda, after an identity card was found from his bag. Roy had apparently come to Kolkata to attend a religious ceremony. He was returning home when the incident occurred. A card issued to physically challenged people was also found from his bag. It was learnt that Roy had a problem with his right arm.

"It is still not clear how the incident occurred. Chances are there that the man, while taking the Golabari police station area to reach the station, was attacked by the miscreants for his belongings. They might have stabbed him when he tried to resist them. It can be a fallout of an argument with some hawkers or stall owners at the bus stand outside the station. The weapon used to stab him was not a dagger but a knife used to cut fruits or vegetables. He seems to have rushed to the station to seek help," the official added.

Roy had lost consciousness by the time he reached hospital. The police are waiting to question him after he regains consciousness. Doctors, however, said that Roy is in a serious condition and the cops may have
to wait for some time before he is able to provide them with the details.

"We are investigating the matter and have informed his relatives in Malda. They should be reaching Howrah soon. More details will be available when he regains consciousness," said Milan Kanta Das, superintendent of railway police, Howrah.
