Chennai, 17 February 2011: MS Dhoni set the tone for India’s World Cup campaign with a sparkling century, which was backed up by seven wickets by spinners as India ended their warm-up with 100 per cent result after hammering New Zealand by 117 runs. Earlier, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni hammered an unbeaten century and Gautam Gambhir added 89 as the World Cup co-hosts rattled up a remarkable 360-5.
India got off to a faltering start with the eagerly-awaited innings of the world’s top batsman Sachin Tendulkar ending after only 17 runs when he was bowled by paceman Tim Southee with a slower ball in the eighth over. Fellow opener Virender Sehwag (23) soon followed, clean bowled by Jacob Oram, to leave the home side on 42-2 at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium.
But a run of blistering performances from Virat Kohli (59), Dhoni, who struck 108 off 64 balls, and Gambhir gave India a vice-like grip on the match, India’s second World Cup warmup outing after defeating Australia on Sunday. It was just the response Dhoni had hoped for after the skipper lamented the middle-order’s flop against Australia.
Dhoni and Suresh Raina added 124 runs at a breakneck speed with the century partnership coming up in a mere 45 balls as they wrought havoc with New Zealand’s bowling attack. The fast-improving Kohli kept the innings going with his 68-ball 59 which included seven boundaries and added 106 with Gambhir before he fell, chasing a wide delivery from Oram.
After Gambhir’s departure, it was Dhoni and Raina all the way as they pulverized the bowlers — Dhoni memorably striking seven fours in a row. Such was the dominance of the Indian batsmen that the final 16 overs brought 193 runs.
For New Zealand, led by Ross Taylor in Daniel Vettori’s absence, Southee and Oram were the most successful bowlers with two wickets apiece, while the spinners Nathan McCullum and Luke Woodcock failed to make an impression.
