- 2-year-old girl injured in monkey attack; second incident in fortnight
Chamarajanagar, August 2011: With the increase in population of monkeys in the town, the residents of Gundlupet are a worried lot. The monkeys are attacking children.
A two-year-old girl was attacked by a pack of monkeys. recently. Spoorthi, daughter of Ramesh, an employee with the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) suffered serious injuries and was treated in a local hospital. The tiny tot was playing outside her house when a monkey suddenly attack her, eyewitnesses said.
This is the second incident of monkey attack on a child in the town. There has been increase in the monkey population. Gundlupet town and surrounding region is facing monkey menace recently after the translocation of monkeys into forest from neighbouring districts.
The people have appealed to the town municipality to take remedial measures to check the
primate population.
Numerous monkeys
The incident happened near CESC office. There are numerous packs of monkeys taking shelter in the trees in the colony.
Municipal authorities have done little to drive away the monkeys, a resident said.
According to residents, the authorities concerned from neighbouring districts and city corporations like Mysore City Corporation and Chamarajanagar Municipal corporation catch monkeys in their areas and leave them in the forest fringes. These monkeys take shelter in Gundlupet and surrounding areas. Monkeys also enter houses and ransack food and kitchen items, the residents complain.
When contacted, Dr Jagadish, medical officer of the government hospital, said monkey bite can be fatal if not treated on time. Those injured by monkeys should seek immediate medical help, he says.
