Mangalore, 13 Jul 2014: A drive to educate and create awareness on Children’s Rights began at bus stand opposite to St Agnes College here on Saturday July 12.

Dakshina Kannada (DK) district child protection officer Usman inaugurated the drive by unfolding the banner of the awareness drive, here on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, Usman said, ‘This is a unique programme. Even though Child-line has been working for the welfare of children, not many people know about it. Therefore, there lies greater need to create mass awareness about the organization which works for the protections of children’s rights. Every individual in the city should know about the child-line. And whenever a person finds the violation of the children’s rights, he/she should call Child-line toll free number 1098 number and help a child to grow in good environment and enjoy its rights,’ said Usman.

Speaking on the occasion, DK district Child Welfare Committee (CWC) new president Nikesh Shetty said, ‘Everyone should know about the rights of the child. I wish that this drive will achieve success in its mission,’ said Nikesh.

Sr Prem D’Souza presided the programme and thanked the NGOs for associating with the College.

Sr Prem said, ‘It was the vision of St Agnes College founder to work for the betterment of society.  Meanwhile, its being realised in a small way by organizing this programme.  The violation of the children’s rights is a national issue.  I feel that every child has a right to be cared, hence through these activities every student should take part in the growth of the society,’ said Sr Prem.
St Agnes College head of department of chemistry Dr Jayantha, programme co-ordinator Mary D’Souza, head of department of social work Dr Noyline and others were present.

The students of St Agnes College distributed handbills on child rights in 15 locations across the city.

The programme was organized by Human rights education cell of St Agnes College themed, Agnes towards communities, in district CWC, Child-line, and the PADI Institute for Child Welfare.
