Mumbai, 05 July 2014: Upma Shukla, 21, a second-year arts student, hanged herself at a relative’s house in Palghar after a fight with her sister.

A college girl committed suicide in a relative’s house in Palghar late on Thursday evening, allegedly after being scolded by her elder sister for being addicted to Facebook and WhatsApp and chatting with a boy. She went to the relative’s house after the tiff with her sister.

Upma Shukla, 21, an SYBA student of a college in Ubarikheda, Hardoi, UP, hanged herself from the ceiling of a room in Navli.

Upma and her sister, Mahima, a Palghar resident, had gone to Ubarikheda to appear for the SYBA exams in May 2014. Mahima’s husband, Amit Tiwari, went to bring his wife back home, and since vacations had started Upma came along with them to Mahima’s house in Palghar.

Mahima allegedly objected to Upma being addicted to Facebook and WhatsApp and chatting with a boyfriend in UP, said inspector Nilesh Mainkar of the Palghar police. "Mahima wanted Upma to spend time with the family."

Three days ago, after a fight between the two sisters, Upma called her brother Gaurav Shukla in New Delhi and asked him to take her away from Palghar. Gaurav asked her to shift to a relative’s house in the same area and he would fetch her a few days later, police said. Upma shifted to Vinod Dube’s bungalow in Navli, Mainkar said.

Mahima visited Dube’s house and pleaded with Upma to return home until Gaurav arrived from New Delhi, but Upma said she would continue to stay at Dube’s house till Gaurav came, said Mainkar.

On July 3, after watching a TV serial, Upma retired for a nap and locked the door of her room from the inside. Other family members were having their afternoon nap when a postman, finding the main door locked from the inside, went to the rear of the bungalow to deliver a letter.

A woman in the house took the letter and then decided to find out why Upma didn’t hear the postman at the main door. Pushing open a second door to Upma’s room, she found the girl hanging from the ceiling fan with a dupatta around her neck.

"We took custody of the body and sent it for a post-mortem to JJ Hospital. A report is awaited," said Mainkar. "We have registered a case of accidental death and are checking records of the last call made by Upma. We have information that Upma had a tiff with her elder sister over Upma using WhatsApp and Facebook," said Mainkar.
