M’lore: Father Muller Nurses get new insights on Qualitative Research from Global Experts

Mangalore, 19 Jun 2014 : Qualitative Research is a form of social inquiry that focuses on the way people make sense of their experiences in the world they live. The use of Qualitative Research methods proliferates throughout health care and specifically Nursing Research studies. Hence, there is a need for Registered Nurses to become informed regarding the concepts of qualitative research findings in practice.

 

Keeping this objective in mind, an International Conference on “POWER OF THE PAST-FORCE FOR THE FUTURE,  an Update on Research” was organized by the Dept. of Community Health Nursing & The Alumni Association of Father Muller College of Nursing in the Decennial Memorial Hall of Father Muller Campus on 13th June 2014.

 

The programme began with first session at 8.55am, during which Dr Aloysius H Sequeira, Professor, NITK, Mangalore familiarized with the concepts of Research.

 

The Inaugural programme commenced with a prayer song at 9.45am Rev. Sr. Winifred D’Souza, Principal welcomed the gathering. The conference was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Patrick Rodrigues Director FMCI, Dr Henk Verloo, Dr Aloysius H Sequeira and other dignitaries on the dais by lighting the lamp. Prof. Leena K.C introduced the guests. Mrs. Irene Alvares proposed the vote of thanks.

 

Following a short break, Dr Henk Verloo, Professor, University of Lausanne, Switzerland, elaborated on Standardization of tools used in Research. Particulars of Research Grant writing was dealt by Dr. M.S Baliga, Research Associate, Research & Development Cell, FMCI, Mangalore.

 

The afternoon session dealt with the basic tenets of Qualitative Research i.e. “Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis” by Dr Henk Verloo Professor, University of Lausanne, Switzerland. He highlighted the steps of Literature search and problems with identifying studies with relevant examples.

 

 

A panel discussion was conducted on the topic “Conducting Qualitative Research- Sharing experiences with Researchers” moderated by Prof. Leena K.C.  The panelists were Dr. Henk Verloo, Dr. Mamatha Pai, Dr. Nancy Fernandes, and Dr. Larissa Martha Sams. The last session on “Analysis of Qualitative Data” was briefed by Dr. Nancy Fernandes.

 

Delegates from Switzerland, Kerala and Karnataka attended the conference.

 

 

The one day International conference which was highly informative and knowledgeable came to an end with the Valedictory function at 4.40pm. Dr. Nancy Fernandes was the chief guest, Rev. Sr. Winifred D’Souza, Principal, Father Muller College of Nursing presided over the function. Mrs. Irene Alvares read the report of the Conference. The certificates of participation were distributed to the delegates by the Chief Guest & the Principal. Mrs. Leena K.C thanked the team of organizers.
