Udupi/Moodubelle: Academic Year 2014-15 inaugurated in St. Lawrence Educational Institutions

Udupi, 31 May 2014: St. Lawrence Educational institutions formally inaugurated the academic year 2014-15 on Saturday, 31 May 2014 at 9.30 am in St. Lawrence Church Parish Hall. The inaugural function was presided over by Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes, Correspondent of the educational institutions. Elias D’Souza, one of the old students of the institution, who had returned from Dubai after nearly 25 years of successful service as an engineer, proprietor of newly established CiviTech-Civil Engineering and Project Management Firm and the Chief Editor of Bellevision.com was the chief guest.

 

Other dignitaries on the dais included Rajendra Shetty-President of Belle Grama Panchayat, Devdas Hebbar-Member of the Udupi Taluk Panchayat and President of Old Students Association, Alphonse K. Alva-Vice President of the Parish pastoral Council, J.B. Miranda-Memebr of Managing Committee, Joseph Martis-President of the Parents-Teachers Association, St. Lawrence PU College, Mrs. Shanti Alva and Mrs. Gladys Rebello-President and Vice President of Parents-Teachers Association, St. Lawrence English Medium High School, Fr. Paul Sequeira-Principal of St. Lawrence PU College, Fr. P. Raj-Principal of St. Lawrence English Medium High School and Mrs. Hilda Aranha-Senior Teacher of St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High School.

 

 

The students of the St. Lawrence English Medium High School conducted the prayer service. Edward Larsen D’Souza, lecturer of Political Science in St. Lawrence PU College introduced the chief guest of the function Elias D’Souza. The new academic year 2014-15 was formally inaugurated by Elias D’Souza by lighting the lamp along with other dignitaries on the dais.

 

The new students to the first, eighth and First Year PUC were formally welcomed by presenting flower to one student representing each class by the senior students. New staff members were also welcomed by Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes.

 

Following the analysis of the results of SSLC and Second Year PUC, the meritorious students who had scored distinction marks were felicitated by the chief guest, Elias D’Souza by offering them shawls and flowers.

 

In his address to the students, Elias D’Souza said that in this age of competition, parents have a lot of hope and aspirations from their children and they have sent them to these educational institutions on which they have reposed their faith. He asked the students to make best use of the facilities and teaching in these institutions to achieve success. He emphasized on the importance of sports and said that students should give sufficient time to sports activities and build their personality along with academic excellence.

 

Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes   formally welcomed the staff members to the new academic year by offering them flowers.

 

Rajendra Shetty wished the staff members and students well for the next academic year. He stressed on the need to keep the surroundings of the educational institutions clean especially during the monsoon season in order to prevent contagious diseases. He appreciated the  good results and discipline of St. Lawrence English medium High School under the principalship of Fr. P. Raj.

 

In his presidential message, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes highlighted the importance of hard work and dedication which were necessary both for the students and the teachers in achieving success in examinations.

 

Fr. Paul Sequeria, Principal of St. Lawrence PU College welcomed the guests and the gathering, Srinivas Ballal, senior teacher of St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High School proposed the vote of thanks and Mrs. Shyamala B.N. lecturer in St. Lawrence PU College compeered the programme.

 

Earlier, on Friday, 30 May 2014, Teachers’ Enrichment Programme covering teachers from St. Lawrence PU College, St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High School, St. Lawrence English Medium High School and Church Aided Higher Primary School was conducted in St. Lawrence PU College Hall from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm. Miss Shwetha Rasquinha, Assistant Professor-MSW Department of St. Aloysius College (Autonomous) was the Resource Person.

The inaugural function was presided over by Alphonse K. Alva-Vice President of the Parish Pastoral Council. J.B. Miranda-member of the Managing Committee was the chief guest. Other dignitaries on the dais included Rev. Fr. Paul Sequeira-Principal of St. Lawrence PU College, Rev. Fr. P. Raj-Principal of St. Lawrence English Medium High School and Mrs. Hilda Aranha-Senior Teacher of St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High School.

 

Rev. Fr. Paul Sequewira introduced Miss Shwetha Rasquinha. The daylong Teachers’ Enrichment Programme was formally inaugurated by Alphonse K. Alva by lighting the lamp. In his address, Alphonse K. Alva complimented the educational institutions for good results and highlighted the importance of the enrichment programme as it would help in imbibing new ideas and methods in teaching the students more effectively.

 

Miss Shwetha Rasquinha, besides being Assistant Professor in MSW in St. Aloysius College, mangalore is currently pursuing PH.D. in Medical Social Work from Mangalore University. Earlier,  Mis Rasquinha had worked as a Counsellor for HIV/AIDS patients for two years from 2003-05; served as a lecturer for BSW at Roshni Nilaya from 2005-07. She had represented India at the Vatican City for an International Conference and presented a paper titled “Changing Values and Faith in Indian Youth”. She has been addressing teachers, parents and youth of various schools, colleges and churches. Presently, she is a volunteer counselor for the family of cancer patients.
