Udupi: Santhan Mathias (83), victim of assault seeks justice alleging police apathy
Media Release
Udupi, 19 Mar 2014: Ronald Castelino, proprietor of a travel agency in Shankarapura, near here and a social worker, alleged during a media conference held here on Tuesday March 18 that the law enforcement agencies at Shirva police station denied to provide security to an elderly man who was assaulted and threatened by his neighbor earlier this month.
The eighty-three-year-old Santhan Mathias, residing at the limits of Mudarangady gram panchayat, near here with his sick wife, was badly assaulted and threatened by his neighbor forty-eight-year-old Joseph D’Souza on Sunday March 2 evening.
As per the case number 58/2014 registered at Shirva police station on Tuesday March 4, Joseph D’Souza, a physical education teacher at St. Lawrence PU College Moodubelle, has been involved in many other criminal cases. But none of the cases have been proven in court.
The accused also threatened Mathias’ family comprised his 2 married daughters. Despite several eyewitnesses and visual proof, the police were not willing to register FIR against him. While the complainant pleaded for security, the police allegedly denied.
This attitude of Shirva police has created a bad image in the minds of the public. The same complaint letter has been forwarded to CM Siddaramaiah, Udupi district-in-charge minister Vinayakumar Sorake and district police officers.
The victim Mathias urged the media support in getting justice.
Mudarangady gram panchayat former member Wilfred D’Souza was also present at the media conference.

Why Santan uncle went to Police Station? Is there any need to pull this issue to the Media? As far as i know this is petty between two neighbours which could be solved within the Ward limit (wado) if not this matter should have brought into the knowledge of the Parish Priest and handled there itself instead of going to the police station and Media. I feel Santan Uncle misguided by people and at the end Santan Uncle will suffer and no one will come to help when the case is referred to the court. Very Sad. | |
