M’lore: Women deserves respect everyday; Fr Richard Coelho

Mangalore, 9 Mar 2014: The department of obstetrics and gynecological nursing of Father Muller College of Nursing organized a state level workshop on ‘Reduce Maternal and Infant Mortality, Midwives Act Now’ at decennial memorial hall here on Saturday March 8.
 
 
Midwife is a women and work for women, thus this workshop was organized on the occasion of International Women’s Day. Midwives play an important role in reducing maternal and infant mortality. Therefore with an idea to educate and enhance the skills of the midwives in providing quality and ethical health care this workshop was organized.

 
Academy of Nursing Studies and Women’s Empowerment Research Studies (ANSWERS) executive director Dr M Prakasamma was the chief guest of the occasion.

 
Father Muller Charitable Institutions director Fr Patrick Rodrigues presided the programme.

 
 
Father Muller Medical College Hospital administration Fr Richard Coelho, Father Muller College of Nursing principal Sr Winifred, Associate Professor Savita Cutinho was the dignitaries present on the dais.

 
Father Muller Medical College administrator Fr Rudolph Ravi D’Sa, Father Muller Charitable Institutions CNO Sr Aileen Mathias was also present.

 
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Prakasamma said, ‘As today is International Women’s Day, we should celebrate the spirit of being a women and perform the role what we are destined for.” She pointed out that unfortunately, many people don’t really know what role midwives play in women’s health care.  Midwives are skilled in creating a health care experience that is tailored to your personal preferences and health care needs. They offer services beyond health care,’ said Dr Prakasamma.

 

 
 
 
Dr Prakasamma said, ‘Maternity is a glorious process, it is bringing forth a new life into the earth. Every birth is a new hope. During this process a woman should not be considered as a labour who gives out something but should be treated with care and dignity,’ said Fr Prakasamma.

 
On this occasion, Muller Spring and Maternity procedure manual was released by the dignitaries.

 
Fr Richard Coelho said, ‘Women should be respected and appreciated for her contribution towards home and society.’ He quoted an article written in the magazine, it read, 66 percent of the work is done by the women but only 10 percent of the benefit reaches her. He also said, ‘It is not only on Women’s Day we talk about the women empowerment but everyday she has to be respected and honored,’ said Fr Coelho.

 
Fr Patrick Rodrigues began his presidential address by wishing the women on the occasion of International Women’s Day. He said, ‘Midwife plays an important role of saving the life of the mother and the child. A mother brings a new life to the world. A person who serves and saves her and child’s life should be empowered,’ said Fr Rodrigues.

 
Fr Rodrigues further said, ‘In order to reduce the mortality rate, the nurses and the midwives should make a difference. The mother should be given a sense of importance and sense of pride for having brought a life into the world,’ said Fr Rodrigues.

 
He concluded by saying that this workshop will help the participants empower themselves and make a difference in the society.

 
The experts in this field will speak on topics like Obstetrical Emergencies, Intra-Partum Care by Midwives, Professional Recognition as Midwives, Labour Room Dynamics and skill training will also be given for the participants.
