Mangalore: It was dog lovers day as First Dogs Show held at Nehru Maidan

Mangalore, Feb 16, 2014 : There are several special days in a yearly calender to celebrate and we just finished Valentines Day. Dogs too have a special day and dog lovers in the city, Sunday celebrated special first ever Dog Show at Nehru Maidan on February 16. In a unique dog show nearly 253 dogs, consisting of at least 36 breeds, took part in the first dog show event hosted by Karavali Canine Club (KCC), Mangalore in association with the 28th and 29th All Breeds Championship Dog Show of Bangalore Canine Club, Bangalore.
The dog show was inaugurated by State executive member of BJP Srikar Prabhu.
Addressing the gathering, he said "The people of Mangalore have got an opportunity to see dogs of different breeds. Such shows are rare and this is the first of its kind in the city."
Among the 253 dogs, 70 participants were from Mangalore and the rest from other states such as Maharashtra, and Kerala, said president of KCC, T Preetham.
"The criterion for judging is the confirmation test and handling and not the obedient test. The best eight breeds will be short listed. Among the 253, 20 percent of the breeds are foreign bred. All the participants are registered under Canine Club of India. Finally, we will select the best dog of the show, which will represent India at the international level," he further added.
There were three rings. If one belonged to Karavali Canine Club, the other two were hosted by Bangalore Canine Club as the 28th and 29th championship dog shows.
Dog breeds such as Miniature Pinscher, pug, Fox Terrier, Bull Dog, Dalmatian, Afghan hound, Dachshund, Irish Setter, golden retriever, Labrador, spaniel cocker, boxer, Dobermann Pinscher, Rottweiler, St Bernard, Siberian Huskie, German Sheperd and others were part of the show.
C V Sudarshan, Rajiv Shandilya of New Delhi and Kenneth Chuah of Malaysia were the judges. Vice-president Manoj Narvekar and secretary of KCC Prasad Aithal were present. Shwetha Mendon compered the show.
