Mangalore, 14 Feb 2014 : The world population reached 625 crore that is expected to cross over 800 crore by 2025.  The rise in population needs foods nearly thrice of existing demand.  If the rise in population reaches 1,000 crore, the countries such as North America had to increase their food produce up to 30 percent, the Latin America and Asian countries had to increase their food produce up to 80 percent, African nations had to increase their food produce up to 30 percent.

‘The declining fertility of soil, insects that have developed resistance to disinfectants are rendering nearly 50 to 70 lac hectares of farmlands redundant  every year; how could the population by the turn of the century meet their food needs? questions Dr Swaminatan.  He adds, the need of the hour is to different methods to meet the high demands on farm produce.

The rising population, aforestation, dwindling aquifers and wildlife, etc are already known mankind.  By the next century, the wild life will go extinct along with several towns and cities world over.  The earth is shuttering owing to global warming, while it takes its natural course by rising sea level.  The sea levels in Indian Ocean will reach 30 to 50 centimeters by 5 decades from now.  The rise in sea levels will submerge Maldives and several other islands.

The metropolitan cities such as New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, London, Glasgow, Tokyo, Osaka, Montreal, Stockholm, Copenhagen, etc will have to be relocated to hinterlands because the planners have already made provision for it.  Meanwhile, metros like Kolkata and Mumbai in India, other metros Jakarta, Cairo, and Rio Digeneiro  lack this provision to relocate in the hinterlands, which would pose new challenges to the civic body.  In Karnataka, coastal cities such as Mangalore, Karwar and Bhatkal would be submerged to the extent of 300 square kilometers.  Nearly 30 lac people had to be evacuated in such case.
